No DVD Error Codes...Just Wont Play Anything

Please ANY and ALL help is appreciated for this problem...

I Have a Dell Dimensions 9100 purchased it New from Dell in October 2005, With Pentium 4-3.00 GHz and 2.99GHz
512mb RAM., with Windows Media Edition. 144GB with 120 GB's free.

I tried to play a DVD in my DVD player and it lit up like it was reading it and then ...nothing...it didnt play or anything and the light went out...went to Media and clicked on play DVD and it said "insert Disc in to drive" it was still in the drive. I haven't tried to play a DVD for about a month so, I didnt realize there was anything wrong until about 2 weeks ago. I have tried to update and everything and Windows tells me there are no more updates available for my system at the time. Not sure what the problem is.
Any suggestions?

same problem myself, conclusion that I have come to is either loose cables or else some update that I have installed recently has messed up the drive...

haven't yet got around to opening the box to check the cables but will post back if it makes any difference

Check out other posts with other DVD ROMs.  They aren't working.  I suspect Windows Media Update KB911565 that was available in February.  Check out the techinical bulletins and see what you think.  I am afraid to uninstall it because when I try, I get a message that a lot of other things may be affected.  I am tempted to uninstall Windows Media player alltogether.
