olympus c500

Question

i got a new digital camera olympus c500 and i just cant get the photos on to my laptop inspiron 5150. i have everything installed to do so but all the time when i connect the camera with the usb cable it just says:the software is unable to find olympus digital camera connected to port or your computer. I'm at it for days and whatecer just cant get it working . i know i must be missing something but dont know what. my son told me when we tryed to get his mobile phone to send photos on to the computer it didnt work either and it did say the same then. Please help!!!!

Does Windows actually acknowledge that you have connected your camera to the laptop?
If it doesn't and there is no sign of any removable disks in My Computer after you have attached your camera then there is either a problem with your USB cable or your USB port assuming that your camera is working correctly.

no windows dont acknowledge that i'm connected..it makes the sound but nothing else..and it did say in some stage that the program isnt installed properly..but i did everything you suppose to do..a million times too :(
