Have you tried replacing the HD?  The noise that you hear is probably coming from the bearings in the hard drive(I've heard it before).  If that's the case, the best option is to replace the hard drive and start fresh.  Once the bearings get out of place, it's difficult for the read/write heads to effectively write the O/S files to the hard disk cylinders, thus creating errors during installation(lock ups, freezes etc.,).  Hope this helps.

Hi Dwdrums 26,

Thanks for the advice. That's exactly what I'm doing. I thought I'd ask just in case there's an alternative. But that noise was quite disturbing.

From your email address I assume you're a drummer. Well, it's nice to hear from a fellow drummer.

Regards,

Yeah man, I can see that you're a drummer also.    I just started using this chat service on yesterday and trying to get solutions to a driver issue with my Dimension 4550 system that was running XP Home Edition.   I had to fdisk and start fresh with another O/S (XP Professional).  Unfortunately, the current O/S didn't have some of the drivers for the system: scan, multimedia card, sm bus controller, usb controller, and video controller.  All of which were marked with the yellow question mark in device manager.

I sent a message to one of the Dell moderators and he told me to download the "Intel Chipset Driver."  Will that solve the problem?  Have you ever had that problem before?

The chipset drivers should be installed before any of the others. Once you install the chipset, you can find all of your other drivers under the download tab at the top of this page.
