Outlook Express Freezes/Causing Reboot Problem?

Here is what I have:  3-year old Dimension 4400, cable moden, Nortin Internet Security.  Everything has always worked flawlessly until last Sunday.  I opened a saved e-mail in Outlook Express and then attempted to open the attached Word doc (which has been opened numerous times before).  The computer froze at the point where it said:  Waiting for Virus Scan."  No mouse movement and no response at all from Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del).  I thus shut the computer with the button on the tower.

When I tried to reboot I got the Dell screen and after about two minutes a msg saying something like: NO REBOOT DISK DETECTED.  I shut it off and tried again, this time tapping which gave me a menu screen for reboot options.  I wasn't really sure what to do so I tried to power on again and got the same Dell screen and the same error msg.  Tried this about six times.

I have a Windows XP CD-Rom so I put it in and powered on again.  This time numerous files began loading at the bottom of the screen and the computer looked like it would reboot.  I got a screen which asked if I wanted to perform a Recovery (yes) and then I screen asking if I wanted to start a fresh reboot or return to the settings of the last successful reboot.  I chose the latter and things looked like they would work.  However, I then got a msg saying something like:  NO HARD DRIVE DETECTED.  I tried the whole process a few more times (with the XP CD-ROM) and was amazed that the computer eventually booted successfully.  Got my wallpaper, all my icons, everything!  I then opened Outlook Express and tried to open a new e-mail (from a trusted source).  Got the hourglass and the computer froze again.  Could not shut down, so again hit the button on the tower.  Started it again and got the blue Dell screen.

My suspicion is that it has something to do with file corruption in Outlook Express.  I contacted Symantec in case this is a known problem with NIS (or a virus or Trojan horse which got in undetected), but they told me only to do an online system scan once I got the computer rebooted again.

I hope this is a recognizable problem and something easy to fix.  I am most appreciative for any advice anyone can give me.  Best regards and thank you.
