Found out what it is: a partition for use by Intel Rapid Start, to allow reducing power consumption in sleep mode and hasten resumption from that lower power sleep mode. Basically, like the hibernate option, just copies your RAM onto the hard disk. For me, useless.
I think it's a little ridiculous that that uses 8 GB of the hard drive, and then Windows 8's fast start uses another 8 GB for its own hibernation file. Rather redundant, a complete waste of space, and very negligible time savings with booting/resuming. I disabled both.
I tried posting a screen capture of the partitions from diskmgmt.msc but my post will not display for some reason. Disk Management does not display a format type of the partition; the only one it shows with a type (NTFS) is the C: drive.
And yes, this is an SSD, under Windows 8.
I'll try posting a screen capture again in a separate post.

Hi Icedawg,
What's the format of the 8GB partition? Is this an SSD hard drive?

Ok, I see what you mean. I have the same thing on my Win 8 machine. Are you able to assign a drive letter to that 8GB partition?

When I right click on the partition under Disk Management, the only option available is to delete the volume. Any other thoughts?
Thanks.

Sorry, but I've no idea. I would just leave it as is.

I'd like to use that space though. Does anyone else know what that 8 GB partition is about? Can I just delete it?
Thanks.
