PC deleted files on cd when adding to it - help please?

Hiya,

I had plenty of space on a CD-R and was adding a further 2 files to it. It copied the files but then all the rest of the contents had gone.

Dell helpline were as much use as a chocolate fireguard, they had already asked what format I was using, then said that there can't have been enough space so it overwrote the existing info! I pointed out that it couldn't as it's a CD-R, they put me on hold then came back and said that I must have missed the message which asked if I wanted to format the disc. I didn't miss any message.

She put me on hold again and then came back and said I should be using CD+R not CD-R.

Could anyone clarify if this is correct? My drive is NEC DVD+-RW ND-3450A in a Dimension 4700

Also my hibernate option has disappeared and she said that it will be a software issue and something I've downloaded will have removed it but that I would have to pay for software support. I haven't called them yet as I was wondering if someone on here could help maybe???

I'm selling the pc to a family member and don't want to sell them a duff pc!

Were you using the Windows CD writing software or Nero, Sonic, etc. You are writing a multi-session CD (that is the only way to write to a CD-R which contains data.) I must admit, I have never heard of a CD+R.:smileysurprised: But who am I?

Hi Kanuk001,

I was just selecting the files from the documents folder and clicking on "copy the selected items" then clicking on the cd drive. I've always done it this way and not had any problems adding to a cd before? What does multi-session mean - is the data there somewhere still?

I checked out the info for my drive and it DOES write to cd-r so I called Dell back and they said it is a corrupt cd. They solved my hibernate problem - it was a setting which had been reset after they advised me to format my hard drive. So I made a complaint to one of the managers there as not only had the last "technician" given me wrong info but also tried to get me to pay for software support!!!

Oh, and I forgot to ask also (as I need to dig out all my computer stuff), does anyone know if the warranty is still valid if I sell the pc?

Got a response from Dell with respect to the warranty - it's still valid if I sell the pc.

So does this multi-session writing to cds normally cause problems?:smileysurprised:

No multi session is the second best way to write data…

The best way is to use Authoring Software (Nero, Roxio, Sonic, etc.) in conjunction with a Data CD project and set the burn to Finalize the media. You cannot add/delete or otherwise make any change to burned disc, but it is a rock solid stable as you can get!

With Sessions (XP Burning) you can add/overwrite but not delete. 'Overwrite' on a CD-R leaves the old file on the media but it cannot normally be accessed anymore. The same applies to RW media. It is the Type of burning selected that controls how the media behaves, not the type of media itself.

Understand that only similarity between optical media and the magnetic media you are used to, is that both are round. That's it! How things are done and how you can use them are completely different.

It appears that your sessions have been corrupted. If the data is important to you, you are going to have to use a 3rd party software to recover it. 2 excellent choices are CD Roller and ISO Buster.

Both have a trial version, but you will have to Buy before it will actually recover anything.
