Philips DVD+RW DVD8601 Refuses to read any DVD+R(W) media or record to it whatsoever.

This is very frustrating for me, i bought this system so i could clip and record my own dvds.  But when i went to try and actually burn a DVD, it refuses to recognize that #1, theres a disc in the drive, and Number 2, that Its an empty disc.  Please Help me!  I've tried so many different brands of DVD+R in the last few days that i've got no more money left.  This system Should Write and Read to it, at least thats what i thought that i was getting in this drive.  I need assistance ASAP.  So if anyone out there can point me in the right direction, maybe help me with exactly what my problem is, it would be great.

RedSox12935,

Specifically, what Dell software didn't work?

I just got a new Dell XPS Gen 3 computer with a Philips DVD+RW DVD8601 dual layer DVD recorder. The Philips DVD+RW DVD8601 refuses to recognize any DVD+R(W) media or record to it. I've spoken to Dell support and they want me to do a full reinstall of Windows XP. I don't think so. I beleive that I received a defective Philips DVD+RW DVD8601. I'm still trying to deal with Dell Support. What is suppose to happen when you insert a blank DVD+R(W)??? Can you use Windows Explorer to read it? Also, my Philips DVD+RW DVD8601 can burn CD-R's but it doesn't recognize any brands of DVD+R(W). Any suggestions on what this could be???

Also, I've tried Sonic RecordNow 7.1 Deluxe and Nero 6 Ultra. Neither work for DVD burning. It's very frustrating.

dcrip5, I am glad to hear that you are experiencing the same issues. That means that I am not alone which leads me to beleive we have a defective DVD Recorder! I will be speaking to Dell shortly to figure out what's going on. I am very annoyed at Dell for their poor technical support. To actually suggest to me to reinstall Windows XP on a brand new out-of-the-box system is beyond stupidity!

I upgraded my system to SP-2 and now it appears to work (at least I have been able to write a short movie to a DVD+R, which I was able to play in my normal DVD player of my home entertainment center). I don't see the relation between the DVD burner and the upgrade to SP-2, but my the reboot fixed something.

Well it turned out that my brand new computer I just bought had a DEFECTIVE Philips DVD+RW 8601 DVD Recorder! Dell sent a new drive to me and it works fine. No drivers needed...just took the old drive out and put the new one in. Now I can finally burn DVD's...YAY!!!

I'm having problems writing to any disks with my Philips DVD8601. I'm able to read from any disk, but not write. I have the Dimension 8400 also. I've tried the latest Roxio, Nero, Pinnacle and Sonic MY DVD Studio Deluxe 6. Is this drive just a lemon?

Thanks for any help!

Ashleyn, you described my exact same problem! Finally, Dell shipped me a replacement drive. About a minute to pop the old drive out and put the new one in...no software needed...it immediately worked. It sounds like we both got a bad batch of DVD Recorders from Dell! Call Dell up and complain!!!
