primary eide controller operating outside normal specifications
Hi. I'm close to freaking out so maybe someone can help. My computer (8100, 1.3 Ghz, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HD, Windows ME) beeps annoyingly twice every time I boot up. It then says, "dell's disk monitoring system detected that drive O on the primary eide controller is operating outside normal specifications. It's advisable to immediately back-up data and replace hard-disk drive by calling support on dell." It then says hit F1 to continue or F2 to go to setup. I hit F1 and everything is fine, except the next time I boot, it happens all over again. This has been going on for 3 days.
Something isn't right somewhere, but I don't know what to look for. I use NAV and adaware. Less than half the 1.3 space is used. Do disk drives just go bad after a while? I bought the computer in 7/01. What should I do? Thanks so much everyone.

It's a S.M.A.R.T drive warning that the hard drive is failing, if the system is under warranty, then contact Dell about replacing the drive. Also, backup any data you wish to save, you can read more about S.M.A.R.T drive technology in the following article.

As far as I know, failing hard drives don't fix themselfs, keep your data backed up, just in case. Personally I would buy a new HD, if you shop around you will find that the prices are really low. Also, you could run Dell's diagnostics to checkout the hard drive, the instructions for this, should be in your owner's manual.
