Problem running Half Life 2
Hello,
Can anyone please help me or point me in the direction of a solution to this problem ?
I recently purchased a Dell Dimension 8400 in the UK. The specs are a P4 3.0Ghz, 1024MB of PC-4200 memory, a SATA 250GB drive and a 256MB Radeon X800 XT graphics card. It also has a Sony CD-RW and a Philips DVD8601 16 x DVD+RW drive.
The problem I'm having is that even though I've managed to successfully install Half Life 2 and complete the Steam registration/unlocking process, the game itself just won't run at all. What happens is that I open the Steam console right-click on Half Life 2 and then select Launch Game.
And then....... nothing. Seriously, no error message, no nothing. The DVD spins for about 15 seconds and then just stops and then.... nothing happens.
Needless to say I phoned the Vivendi Half Life 2 tech support helpline and they just said that there's a problem with my DVD drive and that I need to get a firmware update from my manufacturer or find some way of lowering the speed at which the DVD drive operates.
In desperation I phoned the Dell XPS dedicated support line and the guy said there is a firmware update for the DVD8601 drive but he wouldn't give me the URL until I gave him my XPS tag number. Now, I know I don't actually have an XPS machine but I paid roughly the same money as an XPS would cost. And I had tried the 'standard' Dell support line but, to be perfectly frank, they were pretty clueless.
Can anyone help me with this please ?
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
Have you tried the Advanced Search or the Product Support in the upper left for firmware updates.
