Problem with blank DVDs

Have a Dimension E250 with a HL-DT-ST-GSA-31N DVD & CD WRITER DRIVE. I can read & burn CDs, I can play DVDs, but if I put in a blank DVD the drive icon (on MY COMPUTER) reverts to CD drive and if I click OPEN or EXPLORE it says DRIVE NOT ACCESSIBLE.
I have tried +R & -R DVDs, downloading frimware, deleting the driver & rebooting, no luck.
OS is Windows Media Centre, Service Pack 2 by the way
HELP! Anyone!

In My Computer, the drive will show the DVD as a CD because Windows cannot
recognize a DVD.  To burn a blank DVD you need to use third-part burning software.

Thanks for the advice. I am using Roxio - after reading the original and asking for blank media, it rejects the blank DVDs and keeps asking for blank disc. I have tried DVD -R and +R. Any ideas?

Will the drive read a DVD that has data on it?  What brand of DVDs are you using?

The drive will read disks with data on - including ones I made earlier in the year. I don't burn DVDs often - and the drive seems to have developed a fault during a quiet couple of months. I use philips discs & datawrite - I have bought some woollies ones this week to try different formats! The discs burned successfully in the past are on Phillips +R.

The reason Explore will not recognize a blank DVD disc is because Windows
does not recognize DVD media.  This is normal.  Third-party software is required.

Since the drive reads DVD discs, it appear OK.  If third-party software is not recognizing
a DVD disc it usually the media quality.  The follow article is about media quality and
the different brands and manufacturers ..............

You may want to consider a know higher quality product.

There was a Firmware issue here that may or may not help ............
