Problem with hard drive.

I have a Dimension XPS Gen 5. I start it up, it goes to Windows, loads for a few seconds, then goes to a blue screen with this action on it:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with thee manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x80635429, 0xF45DC99C, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

I'm guessing my hard drive died and I need a new one. Is this a problem I can fix on my own (my friend said he had a similar problem and Dell shipped him a new hard drive to install), or do I need to call a "Dell technician" to analyze this and send a 3rd party over to fix it? Thanks for any help.

By the way, this happens every time I restart it, not just once.

Based on what Microsoft has to say about the 0x0000008e, I'd suggest trying safe mode in case it has to do with hardware acceleration or an incorrect driver or so. If you recently added any hardware, try removing it (including new mice, keyboard, printer, other usb devices, and obviously anything internal).
