Problem with Replacement DVD R

I just replaced the factory installed DVD/CD drive on my E510 with a Sony DRU-840A.  When I start the computer there are two short beeps as it boots.  Then I get a message that is cut off on the left margin but I do see this:...ies
                                      ... 07

...ound:  Parallel ATA, PATA-0  (PRI IDE Master)
...key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

If I F2 it continues to boot and it appears that the drive works (I have played music and loaded software).

I just downloaded the updated BIOS, but the message still appears.  SONY says I would have to talk with Dell.

Any ideas?

Hi Knwalk,

Lets start with a couple of questions, what jumper setting did you use?
Dell uses Cable Select, not Master/Slave.

In the BIOS/System setup verify that the drive is turned on. (Jumper setting must be correct).
Is this a second drive or only one device?

Happy New Year !

Predator,

Thank you very much for the information.  It was the jumper (didn't even know what that was until you mentioned it).  The information on your link was very helpful.

The two beeps are gone, and I am getting the new hardware message, so it looks good.

I have the same problem.  Where is the "jumper setting" .   Drive 2 is turned on.  I replaced the Phillips you tried to help me with and the new unit works but I get the same same message when trying to start the computer.  I checked Drive 2, and found out it was turned on , but did not know where to go from there.  Some of the other drives are not turned on even though they indicate the default is on.  Why would they be off.  Thank you for your help.  Janet

Maxdarx7,

The link below has a picture.  In my case, my new hardware had the plastic piece on the middle posts.  I simply took it off and put it back on the two posts to the left.  I didn't have to do anything in the set up.

Good luck, and, again, big thanks to Predator.
