Problems installing 2nd hard drive
Hello,
I am having considerable problems in trying to install a new 2nd hard drive into my Dimension XPS T500.
The original drive is a MAXTOR DiamondPlus 9 (or 16?) with 14gB capacity. I have 384Mb of RAM.
My current operating system is Windows 98 SE.
My current version of BIOS is A11 (upgraded from A08).
I have recently purchased a second hard drive to install alongside my existing drive.
The new drive is a Maxtor DiamondPlus 9, 80gig in capacity whereas the master drive is 14gig
I am having serious problems installing the new 80gig drive either as 'slave' or 'cable select'.
I believe I have set the jumpers on the new drive, and connected the IDE and power cables correctly...........I then go into the BIOS (ver. A11) and set the new drive as type AUTO...........the result of this is that the drive is not recognised by the System upon reboot (only one drive shown in Device Manager).
Trying to manually configure the new drive in BIOS, as User, results in "Error 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 1".
This is the second new drive I am having this problem with as I returned the previous drive with the same problem, as I assumed the drive was faulty...............this new drive has been tested as operable (by the shop where I bought it) although I can't get it to work.
I do not believe there are any motherboard limitations as to the capacity of additional drives. Or are there ?
I have cleared NVRAM, but to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas as to where I may be going wrong, in order to get my new drive recognised by the Sytem ??
My original drive is possibly a Maxtor Diamond Plus 16 whereas the new drive is a Maxtor Diamond Plus 9....does this make any difference ?
Many thanks in advance for any help proferred.

Thanks for the reply but, as per the site reference, I have set the jumper settings to Cable Select, correctly hooked up the cables and ...................still no joy.
I am beginning to wonder if its a motherboard limitation.
I am using the primary IDE ribbon cable: the main drive is plugged into the black connector and is working..............I am plugging the new 2nd drive into the middle grey connector, and it is not working.................is it possible that the grey connector is faulty ?
