problems recognizing old drive after installing DVD writer.
sorry for long subject.
I've just installed my new DVD writer, not sure if it works but it does read stuff.
the problem is that now my computer doesn't recognize the old DVD player/CD writer..
I'm not very experienced at doing this, took me ages to open the computer, and to slot the new drive was horrendous.. I'm happy the PC still works!!
I used the same IDE cable.. btw.
is there anything else that I should have done in the box? if I try to put a CD in the old DVD player/CD writer, it does open but the PC won't recognize it.
I have a Dimension 2400.
thanks so much!

Hi Flaca,
One of the first things we check is the jumper setting you used. Dell ships their systems using the Cable Select jumper feature, so the new drive should use this as well, not Master or Slave.
Best Regards!

ah, thanks so much Predator,
I had forgotten the jumpers, but a friend reminded me about them and told me to use master and slave, and the drives are both being recognized.. only the new one doesn't work too well..
any reason why Dell use the other type of settings??
thanks so much,

Hi Flaca,
Ease of installation, industry standard, and trouble shooting according to Dell. Myself, I am from the old school, I prefer my systems with the old Master / Slave but to stay along the same lines as Dell Support, we recommend using Cable Select.
Best Regards!

thanks a lot Predator
you know, it's working with master and slave and don't fancy opening the box again, so I'll leave it for now and if later have problems will switch the jumpers.
thanks so much for your help!
