Problems with CD-R

I have a Dell Dimension 4500 with NEC NR 7900 A drive. I am increasingly having more and more trouble with it. It began with problems burning audio cd's with I-tunes. Then I began having trouble playing audio CD's & now it has trouble recognizing about any CD (music, data, or software). I have used a laser disc cleaner a couple of times, but now the drive won't even read this. I have installed the firmware upgrade at Dell.com. I was wondering if these drives wear out & if I should upgrade/replace it?

Go here and see if articles 1 or 8 are any help.

I am fairly certain that none of these issues in the manual apply to me. I am simply using CD's that came with the computer (MS Office 2002) or audio CD's that it has recognized before. What I really need to know if it is worth it for me to buy a new drive from Dell? I am a bit of neophyte about all this so please bear with my ignorance.

I am sorry for the intermittent posts. The article you referred me to is a bit over my head, however, in exploring some of the options and strategies in the article, I found something interesting.  When I run the install/ search for new hardware, I get some interesting messages: "Windows installer cannot find the hardware for" each of the following NtApm, hdc, SCSI Adapter, & TapeDrive. I get similar message in the Device Manager. This may be completely irrelevant, but it seems odd to me. Thanks for any help.

Some of those are not relevant and some might be. Try deleting your CD drive and the secondary channel of your IDE controller in Device Manager then reboot and they will be reinstalled.
