Problems with NEC 1100a

Hi

I have read lots of pages on this forum trying to find an answer for my problem, i have also spent time on the phone to dell trying to sort this... anyway...
I brougt my PC almoust a year ago from dell outlet, with a dvd burner in,i tried it out when it arrived, after 2 faulty discs i got 1 working one that played on pcs but not dvd players, i left it alone, becuase dvds for about 5 meaning i had to spend 15 to get a workin dvd (might aswell buy it ;-) I also used it to play dvds, but a couple of weeks ago, i tried writing a dvd and it didnt work, then again it didnt work, i patched my software updated everything, and it stopped playing dvds, I would get error FFFFFFF on cyberlink, and everything else would just crash i downloaded the new version of cyberlink (trail) but that only played 5minutes of dvd, so i got the full version, same problem again... it wont play, crashes and gets errors after a couple of frames, i have tried it with all sorts of dvd media, R1 real ones R2 real ones R0 copies, all the same prob... i tried to write a dvd, some programs (pinnacle, copy xpress) all insisted that i hadnt got a DVD+R installed, others (ceetah burner, myDVD) all would either write a coaster, or crash halfway thru recording, i have tried several media, TDK, unbranded, AQ, and others but none work....
Ok...
Time to phone technical support...
After an hour or so they decided to conclude (after making me uninstall most of my software, uninstalling the keyboard/mouse drivers acidently, and trying to uninstall windows (o yeah and changing half the registary)) that it was a software problem with cyberlink and myDVD (highly unlikely) I have since tried reverting to old firmware, same prob, reinstalling cyberlink and mydvd, uninstalling nero, same prob, reverting back to the drives old firmware it still doesnt work....
Also now when a DVDs in the drive you have to restart windows several times b4 it recogises the disc in the drive....
Does anyone have any idea in he11 wots going on, i think my drives busted, dell think its software, theres several probs on various forums relating to the nec 1100, I have a 3 yr onsite warrenty, can i use that...
Thanks sooooo much to anyone who can help me......

Hi Chris,
I will be honest with you, I have no idea where to even begin with this. You can ask the Regulars here, this is rare coming from me, but if this was my system, I would format and start all over again with a "Clean" install of Windows XP. Install the Dell supplied burning software and MyDVD. I would then use the article Dell-Stephen has "locked - in" at the top of this conference for the NEC 1100, flash the drive once more to 10GE, verify that it did install, make sure that DMA is enabled for the drive. Test it one more time, if it fails, get back on the phone with Dell, ask to speak to a Supervisor if you have to, be firm but above all else be polite. The "clean" install of XP and the "Dell" firmware should be enough to get the drive replaced. From what you have posted, I see no reason on the surface why this should cost you anything with a 3 yr warranty, unless you used a Non Dell firmware on the drive.

Wish I had more to offer...

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Hi

Thanks for the response, I will phone dell again when ive backed up everything, which is gonna take a while with only a 16x CD drive to use. I have checked the DMA (after reading your response to another topic) it is fine and ive re flashed with the dell firmware. However last time I phoned the tech support, they kept laying the blame on 3rd party software, also if I have to get a dell person out to look at my system, will it matter ive replaced the soundcard, graphics card and added memory (not the rip off "dell approved" stuff) cos will the repair guy try blame it on that?

Thanks

Chris

Ok, earlier today, I wrote a CD completly fine,

I havnt touched any options since, patched anything even touched the control panal, I go to write a backup CD with roxio and It tells me there is not a drive installed, try another program "there is no CDR drive installed" i tried with an audio CD and I had to restart the PC twice b4 it got recognised?????

Before it was only DVDs that were the problem now CD's aswell??? Wot is up with that.....

Please help me as dell have told me they cant do anything til i reinstalled XP, but i cant backup my important files first.... its a endless circle....
