Problems with pop-ups....
I have a Dell Dimension 2350, Windows XP about two weeks ago my computer crashed and I have had to clear and reinstall the operating system along with the drivers two times already. (per Dell). Since all this has been done at start-up I continually get the following.
When I click on Internet Explorer icon to connect to the internet a window pops up trying to download a file
www.7logih.com, then another window pops up saying this file couldn't be downloaded. The next window is 540.filost then passion.com and oldgames.com. None of which I have been on or have any knowledge of where they came from.
I have contacted my ISP provider about this and they are just as baffled as I am. I have checked add/remove programs, nothing. My firewall is on, I have installed and updated Ad-aware and Spybot. Scanned with both and they find things and remove them but it still happens. I have also installed Norton antivirus and it is updated. Scanned, found nothing.
As I stated, I never had any of this before my computer crashed. I am thinking it's Dell that caused this because the first time the rep. had me clean the hard-drive and reinstall everything she failed to tell me to make sure that my firewall was on. (I know about the firewall, however I am not computer savy and don't know where to look) From this point, over about two/three days I had been on/off the internet and checking mail without the firewall. Then after I figured something was up, called Dell back a few days later and had to do the same thing all over again.
So after that long winded explination, if anyone could give me help I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Gina (aka - trot)

Gina:
You've definitely suffered a hijack and trojan attack. This happened during the reinstall when you were connected to the internet before your firewall and A/V were up and running. This happens much more frequently than people realize, because there are all sorts of scum out there looking for open ports to exploit.
I suggest you start over. Wipe your hard drive and reinstall XP. Make sure you turn on the firewall before connecting to the internet. Your first stop should be to MS Updates for the SP2 download and other critical updates.
Then install chipset drivers, video, network, etc.

I was wondering, if I didn't reinstall everything and go through all that again would it eventually do any damage. Other than being annoying the intial time you start up the computer it doens't bother me. I just really don't feel like going through all that again.
Thanks,
Gina
