raid migration 0x0000007e boot failure

last night i added a new 160gb seagate hard drive to my Dimension 8400.  It was the exact model number as the existing drive.  I used disk management to format and partition the drive for use and rebooted a few time to insure stability.  I then started to use Intel Application Accelerator software to migrate both hard drives to a RAID1 array.  I followed the directions in the hardware manual to the letter and everything went according to plan.  Took just under an hour to perform the migration - software seemed to be working fine, Windows saw only the single drive (raid volume) while the Intel software was able to see both drives and report that the array was present.

this morning I am unable to bootup, I get the blue error screen (BSOD) with a STOP:  0x0000007e (0xC0000005, 0x804e13d5, 0xF7902C34, 0xF7902930) error code.  None of the safe modes will boot either.  These report slight variations on the last two or three error codes but no change in overall results.  I am able to boot to the diagnostic and recovery partitions.  Diagnostics report all systems in order and both disks pass all hardware tests.  I am able to enter setup mode for the computer and the on board raid controller.

any thoughts

well - after more than an hour with dell tech $$ support.  here is the resolution.  unplug the new drive to preserve the mirror image.  use the reinstallation disk to start the recovery console.  we tried to fix the master boot record (fixmbr) and repair via check disk (chkdsk /r) to no avail.  so I tried a repair installation of windows xp.   after a few hours this was sucessful and allowed the computer to boot.  I started and shutdown a few times to feel confident that the computer was stable and then plugged the mirror drive back in.  This started a rebuild which took a few more hours overnight.  Most everything worked at that time.

The tech thought that the problem was related to imposing a raid array on top of the original NTFS installation and this prevented some driver or other file from loading - hence the BSOD.  Using the recovery console with the single hard disk already in Raid mode allowed Windows to be reloaded on a disk already in Raid mode.  This led to a functioning computer with all pre-existing user files.  A few applications didn't work, but all the main software worked just fine i.e. MS Office, WordPerfect Office, IE, Outlook Express, Quicken.  Most importantly all my actual data file were intact.   Adding back the mirrored drive didn't fix the few odd apps which didn't work, but i've reinstalled them and they work fine.

When you boot the computer and you set the RAID. What are your steps?

When you load windows xp and you creat the partition, do you format the whole 300GB or so or just 140GB?

At what point does it give you the error?

When copying the setup files or when it reboots after copying the setup files.

Ooops, you have loaded windows I see.

In the BIOS you need to enable somet things and disable some others.

Do you have a Floppy Drive?
>Disable the USB Floppy and no Boot option in that are.
