REFORMAT C

I have had many trojan / malware invasions on my computer.  Although I have successfully removed most of them, it seems impossible to completely stop them.  More importantly, I am worried about any back door entries that are not being detected.  I feel it is time to reformat the hard drive and start over with some more aggressive anti-virus and firewall software.

I have read a little about reformatting, but cannot find any specific directions.  Does anyone know of a list of the software I will need to reload (just to make sure I have it all before I start).  Also any tips for common mistakes would be helpful.

Thanks

Insert the Window XP CD to your computer then restart the computer. When you see the Dell logo, press F12. Then select boot from the CD ROM. You can format your C drive and reinstall window by that way. After you reinstall the window, insert Dell's driver CD and install all the drivers.

If you click on the Solutions tab at the top of this page and navigate to your model you will find a guide for that model.

I like this better . . it seems easier to follow.  You might print out the one you like best for reference during the installation.

Be sure and update to the XP BIOS . .

How to format a hard drive using the WMe Operating System CD.

How to install the WMe operating system from the Dell Windows Me Operating System CD.

The following reinstall guide for the D4100 may also help.

I apologize for hijacking this thread, but I recommend ZoneAlert as a firewall--it's really good.  They have anti-virus SW as well, but I use EZAntivirus.

I think you mean Zone Alarm, which does now have some AV features. The new version 5 does however have many many problems and will disable e-mail scanning in many AV programs

Don't go near Zone Alarm 5 until they fix this.

Use the most recent update to version 4 from here
