Replace both RAID 1 drives for new ones
Hi,
I'm replacing both my RAID 1 drives for new ones of the same size. I'd like to know what's the best way to do this, can i clone the data from the old disk to the new one and rebuild the raid 1 or is there a better way to do this?
Regards

Hi Reignfire,
As for first part of your questions, yes the RAID 1 will re-build the array on the new hard drive. However, the second part of your question has not been tried as we apply this method of replacing the hard drive(s) in the event of one hard drive failing, so I would recommend that you backup all the data before trying this.

Yes, the new disks are the exact same size and type. So i have my disks in bay #0 and #1 in RAID 1, i'll remove the disk in #1 and replace it with one of the new and let it rebuild. After that i can replace the disk in bay #0 with the other new one and it should also rebuild and work fine?

Hi Reignfire,
If one hard drive is failing and hard drives are configured using RAID level 1 - "Mirror", after replacement of the failed disk, system automatically starts the rebuild of the array on the new hard drive. After this process the hard drive has exactly the same structure as the old one. When mirror is used, the hard drives should have the same size. If the replacement disk is smaller just a byte, the controller is unable to rebuild them. Bigger size is OK, just the rest remains unused.
