Resizing, Eliminating Dell Disk Partitions?

I just had a failing Maxtor 80GB disk replaced with a WD 160GB on my Dimension 4700. Because the repair shop cloned the old drive, the three partitions were doubled.

The first partition is type de, the Dell utility. This was a help when I got the Blue Screen of Death, and I'd like to keep it.

The second partition is type 7, Microsoft Windows NTFS. This is Windows XP boot partition.

The third partition is type db, which I guess is for CP/M, etc use.

1st. Do I need the CP/M partition? So far as I know I'm not doing any Z80 stuff. I would like to eliminate it either by combining with the NTFS partition or making it a pure DOS partition. I have a great program I wrote myself that I would love to run in native DOS but it's not necessary, just would be fun.

In any case, I would like to shrink it to its original size of 3 million blocks, but have it at the end of the disk, allowing room to expand the NTFS partition upwards.

2nd. I want to shrink the Dell Utility partition back to its original size of 32098+ blocks, and scoot the NTFS partition downwards to abut it.

I guess my main question is the CP/M partition. Do I need it? Does Dell squirrel stuff away in it such that I should keep it?

Hi, jkteinz:

Yes, this should be no problem. Here's a site that explains all about the Dell partitions, including the restore partition. You obviously know what you're doing so I think that's all you'll need from me.

Good luck!

Thanks for the pointer.

Doing nothing is the easiest. OTOH, I may not want the System Restore because the system mutates so much over time that the original factory settings is like reverting to Neanderthal from Homo Sapiens.

I'm going to have a serious debate with myself.

Cheers,
