Roxio Crashes XP

Hi there

I have a 10 month old Dimension C521. The CD drive is a Sony CDRWDVD CRX310S. I don't have a DVD burner.  Running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2, fully updated.  ZoneAlarm, AVG AntiVirus, various reliable security programs.  CD Burner is Roxio Creator Plus Dell edition, build 2.4.326 (it was called Roxio Creator LE Dell Edition when I first got the PC, but the name changed after I applied a patch).

I have always had problems on and off with Roxio.  Now XP crashes with a blue screen, after every time I write to CDR or CD-RW, and "Windows has recovered from a serious error" appears when I turn the PC off & back on.  The same thing happens when I use "Make Compatible". Now I can't even format a disk if DLA is enabled.

Doesn't look like a hardware issue eg overheating. But I did try cleaning out the tower as far as possible.  It was pretty clean inside.  I still got the XP crashes afterwards.

I've disenabled DLA & started using what seems to be XP's own writing capability, with queue of files etc.  It works so far, but I'd like to have Roxio working properly (can't reinstall it, as the PC came with no installation or recovery disk for Roxio).

Lools like this may relate to DLA.  I've been to Roxio's site, & you have to pay for the latest version of DLA. It's not that pricey but there's no point if it's not going to solve the problem.

I've spent many hours searching for solutions but not found one that looks like it would help.  Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Thank a lot

Jonno

Hi Jonno,

The fix so far for this has been a clean reinstall of Roxio`s software, so you are in sort of a pickle. Please use the following form from Dell to request all of discs.
Request Backup discs

Since you mentioned installing a patch, am I to assume you have already been to the Drivers & Downloads link from Dell and installed the Sonic DLA 5.x update, correct?

Best Regards

Hi Jeff

I should have been more specific: the patch I previously installed was Data204Plus.exe, to allow upgrade to Windows Media Player 11 & resolve the "mediahub.exe" issue.  I think I'd seen the patch for Sonic DLA 5.x a while ago but held off from installing it, as my exact model of Dell wasn't listed by name in the products it applied to. Doh!

Anyway, it's downloaded & installed now.  Formatting & writing to CD have started working again.  May not be the end of the story (thanks for the link to order installation CDs from Dell, which I'll follow up if the trouble returns), but meanwhile I'm seriously happy.

Thanks a million, and very best wishes

Hi everyone

Just an update for anyone in the same position as me: the DLA5.x patch did enable formatting & writing in Roxio, but XP still crashes after "Make Compatible", blue screen and all.  I asked Dell for a reinstallation CD for Roxio (even offered to pay a reasonable price for it!) but was told Dell don't supply them.

I could complain to Dell but am getting a bit tired of Roxio & doubt if it's worth the hassle involved. So back to the XP native CD writer.  It's a bit clunky but at least it works.  From what I've heard, Nero is a better & more stable burning program if you want something with all the bells & whistles.

If you've got Roxio, good luck!

Sorry I was not much help on the problem, Jonno. We seem to be seeing some more issues flow in on this software lately, hopefully we will find a solution.

Best Regards!

Hi Jeff

I'll follow up the link & find what's available. Had a feeling there was probably something free out there that would do the job, but your advice will make it easier to track down.

Thanks again for your time & trouble!

Hi Jonno,

Our Regulars have recommended some free burning programs you wish to review.
I have them listed in Section 7-5, article 16 of the CD/RW link.

Best Regards!

Hello again

Final update on this one, I think (touch wood).

Having initially refused to send me a Roxio installation disk, Dell relented after I pointed out the PC was still under warranty, and ought to have a cd burner which worked without crashing XP.  They have promised to send a disk after all.  It hasn't turned up yet but there are still probably after-effects of the UK postal strike.  Having made my point, I'm not much bothered, as now using a cut-down version of Nero which is excellent. Easier to use, and no "make compatible" procedure needed. Nothing against Roxio, as long as they do something to iron out problems with their software.

You were most helpful Jeff: I learned I wasn't the only one with Roxio problems and could decide how to take things forward. Without the help of the people who answer in various forums, lots of us would truly be in a pickle!

Best Regards

Jonno
