RW/DVD error (code 39)

I have an Inspiron 5100 notebook. It has always been able to play DVDs until recently. Now it refuses to play them. I have tried to update my driver but there is no available update. I have also tried reinstalling the driver with the original Drivers, Utilities, and Applications CD my computer came with. In the device manager there is an error message for HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N. It says 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'. Yet I have tried everything to my knowledge. Please help if you can

Try this Dell Article for removing the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters
in the Registry here .............

Disregard the reference to Roxio.

You will first need to uninstall the DVD drive from Device manger.

1) go to Device manager  2) right click on DVD drive entry and choose uninstall.

3) do not restart and refer to the above link to delete upper/lower filter.

4) go to device manager again, and click on "Scan for hardware". It will bring back the DVD drive entry back in device manger.

This shud take care of the issue.
