safe mode

I am running windows XP and would like information on how to start in safe mode. the info given in help does not apply to my machine. It refers to drop down lists after selecting start...shut down...etc. these drop down lists do not appear in my machine. I prefer to use the short method ( using the F8 key)

You have your answer...  F8 on startup.
