Samsung 840 Pro 250GB

Hello:

I have some very simple questions for those of you who spend
time regularly on these forums and will be very appreciative of your expertise.

I have a 3 year old Studio XPS 8100 i70 2.93gh with 16 MB
memory – 2 WD hard drives and am running Win 7.

I feel that I have plenty of storage so I am willing to
remove one of the current drives if need be as neither one are 50% full.

I want to upgrade to a Samsung 840 pro to speed things up. I
want to do a clean install.

Questions:

Can I install a smaller size drive just to hold the OS and
still see the increase in speed using the old HDD for storage?

Will it be as simple as to just leave the 2 hard drives in
place and just install win 7 on the new SSD, Install win 7 there then remove it
from the present drive?

Will I have to remove the no 1 drive and install the new SSD
in the bracket (with adapter)  in its
place.

Any and all suggestions as to any other possible options and
advice will be appreciated.

Will

Hi Willdloy,

It's easier just to open the case and have a look around. You'll have no trouble finding room for a third drive.

As for performance, obviously with the OS on an SSD, you'll see a significant performance increase. Accessing data files will be limited to the rotational drive performance but most of the heavy lifting will be done by the SSD, which is significantly faster.

I installed an SSD in an XPS 7100 (same chassis). I used the bay normally occupied by a floppy drive.

I do not have a floppy drive. I have 2 dvd drives. I can remove one of the hdd drives to make room if necessary. I am more intrested in the performance questions.
