Do you have more than one drive?

So you have two DVD-ROM drives, correct? In order to update firmware, you should disable the drive you are not updating in system setup.

All DVD-ROM drives can read CDs.

I have the same problem - my drive will not read most home burned CDs - data or audio.  The Teac drive on my system reads them no problem.

I have tried upgrading firmware from the Samsung site but for some reason get the message that the firmware is not compatible with the selected drive even though the firmware is supposed to be the one for the SD-616E.

Let me know if you find anything that works.

Ralph:

If you want to update the firmware, you need to disable the other drive in the BIOS.

Actually I found out that the Samsung site firmware will not update a Samsung OEM drive - in this case Dell.

Samsung has advised that it is highly recommended to not try to update the firmware on an OEM drive - to only use firmware supplied by the OEM provider.

Dell had a firmware upgrade to 502 but this did not solve my problem.  It is strange that Samsung has updates from 501 up to 508 but Dell stops at 502.

Does anyone have any ideas why a drive would stop reading home burnt CDs.  It used to read them, my TEAC drive still reads them but my Samsung drive no longer does.  It reads most retail data disks, is hit and miss on retail audio disks but does not read any home burnt disks (audio or data).Any ideas?

Hi all, sorry that it has been a while since i've responded to my thread about the samsung SD-616E.
The only way that worked for me is getting a new DVD reader/burner....
sry for the bad news....

Samsung drives usually do fine with Samsung or even third party firmware. It's certainly worth trying before you replace the drive.

Hi,

it may be interesting for you to learn, that I have just the identical problem reported by Venilix .Inc . When I have tried to update the firmware of this DVD player, I got as far as King Ralph and no inch further.

Is there any new idea available to make this stubborn device running?

P.S.: a wwi = world wide issue

If all else fails, disconnect your other drive, and make sure the drive you want to flash is connected to the end of the cable.
