SATA ERROR CODE 7

I have a Dimension 4700 and have just bought a replacement SATA drive and reloaded Windows XP. This was successful but when downloading updates it crashed saying a system file was missing/corrupt. I have tried repairing and re-installing XP again but it crashes at different points with different messages. The last of which was an unknown hardware error. I ran the dell diagnostic and got this report for the new Seagate drive. "ST3160318AS Fail Return code 7". I have checked the physical connections and they seem fine. Not sure what to try next, any advice welcome

Contact the vendor from whom the drive was purchased and ask for a return authorization.  The drive isn't working properly.

Error Code 7 indicates the drive failed its self test and the hard drive has either failed or is failing, you need to replace the SATA hard drive.

You could download Seagate's SeaTools diagnostics from their website, burn them to a disc, to check the hard drive.
