Saving data with Disk Read Error

HI all, I am currently receiving a disk read error whenever I try to boot up my Inspiron 600M.  From browsing through the other posts, it looks like my hard drive is shot and I need a new one.  I wanted to see if there is anyway or hope of saving any of my files?

I saw some posts that said I may be able to put the hard drive in another system, but none of them went into any detail so I am not sure how/if this would help.  In addition the only other PC I have access to is a Dimension 8300.  Would it be possible to attempt a recovery using the Dimension?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone may be able to offer!!!

Mount the drive in a 2.5" USB shell (see one link below) and attach it to the desktop, copying what you can.

Thanks for the help ejn.  I will try this and post back if it all works.  This way, somebody else may be able to benefit from your knowledge!

Sorry, but instead of just ordering the case mentioned above, I tried to find a cheaper one.  Since I knew nothing about what I was ordering, I ordered the wrong kind.  I was then wayyyyyyy too lazy to order another and simply had Dell replace my hard drive since I was still under warranty.  I wish I could be of more help.
