scsi/atapi command timeout error

Question

Hi I bought this program several months ago.  Initially, it worked great, but it has gone downhill gradually and now will not work at all.  I get the scsi/atapi command timeout error every time I try to use Nero 6.  It makes no difference whether I'm trying to burn audio, data, or pictures.  It locks up my system & I have to crash it to get out.  Ctrl-alt-delete has no effect.  I am unable to use my mouse; keyboard shortcuts do not work, either.  In burning audio, the lock-up occurs about 6% to 9% into the burn.  In data & pictures, I can get about 70% into the burn.  Sometimes, if I reduce the burn speed to 4X, the burn will complete, but the resulting disk is full of pops, scratches, & spaces, still unusable. I have unplugged & reseated all cables a number of times.  I have uninstalled Nero, using my install disk & Nero's clean tool, several times.  I checked Nero's web site, and found one reference on their German site, but I am unable to understand that one.  I ran a Google search and found many pages about this error, all including Nero, over several years & versions.  This error comes up with various burner brands & os's.  However, no one seems to have a answer for it.  I also have done a forum search and found one hit in back in 2001, I believe, in a notebook forum. I have updated my TDK burner firmware, have used several versions of Nero, starting with 5.5, that came with my Burner, to 6.3.16.  I have enabled DMA, have disenabled it, & am running Intel's  application accelerator at present, with no difference in the error.  I uninstalled Nero, used the basic Roxio in WMP, at 4x, got a complete burn, but the disk is still unusable, still full of pops & squeals.  I then uninstalled Roxio, before trying Nero again. I have unplugged my Samsung DVD CDROM player - Dell supplied- then tried using my TDK.  Still no good, and as of last night, my DVD player will not recognize any disc that's in it.  I have tried different brands of media, to no effect.  I used a laser lens cleaner disk.  The device manager says all drives are working properly. No problem devices in device manager.  This is a Dim 4100, running per Dell, using cable select for CD drives.  I have been to Predator's site so many times I can see his home page in my sleep. System is a Dim 4100 - 933 - 512 ram - ME - Samsung DVD CRROM - TDK4800B - I have minimum programs running at startup per Denny's & Pacman's site.  I shut down AV & all other processes before burning.  I have been to Adaptec's site & have downloaded their 4.71.2 aspi drivers for ME.  No help, besides I understand Nero overlays their own aspi drivers. So I really could use some help.  I don't want to reformat because of the large amount of files I  will have to save on 1.44 floppies.  That's why I bought Nero 6--to use it as a backup and for the upgrade from Nero Express 5.5. Hi Bob,You my friend have had your hands full. The only two things I can think of and you may have already tried these, test the drive in another system to verify it 'works' and the 4.60 ASPI layer, in my opinion, worth about a nickel, this version is the best, especially for Windows Me. I have a clean version stored at the CD/RW site, Section 7-5.Best Regards God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell thedifference. I just downloaded & opened 46-109, then got 46-1021, hasn't made a difference for my Samsung , still will not recognize any discs. The TDK will play audio discs fine, but my MOHAA game will not run from either player. I was out running around in my truck, 2001 GMC, & I think that the disk I made last night, & tried in it, - didn't work- may have messed up my player in my truck. Now it will not play any CD, just hums & then gives me an error message. many many cuss words ! ! !
Used the aspichk from your site before & after downloading 46-109, it said both times that my aspi layers were fine. Going to pull the TDK out tonight & take it to my future son in law & he will try it in one of his systems.
Am open for any other suggestions. Have read that Clone CD will still work for people having this problem, but also, according to my soon to be son in law, that CloneCD is illeagal. Is this right, the illegal part ?
