Showing Two Operating Systems
Sequence of events: Replaced hard drive, installed Windows, restored backed up drive contents and current systems settings, attempted reboot, system would not reboot. Got a screen saying I had a "computer disk hardware configuration problem".
Reinstalled Windows from the CD. Windows seems to be working fine. However, when booting up -- after the Dell BIOS splash screen -- I get a screen showing I have two XP operating systems. One is selected. If I hit the Enter key or simply let the countdown expire, system goes ahead and boots normally.
Is this a bigger problem than I realize? Can I get rid of the extra screen? Thanks for any information and/or advise you can provide.

It appears what happened was the 2nd install you performed, you didn't reformat prior to reinstalling.
What I would do is backup my data and reinstall Windows. When you select to install Windows, I would delete the C partition, recreate it and format it. Then let Windows install.

How to Remove a second copy of XP installed by error & how to Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows.
Click Start > Run > type, msconfig > Click, boot .ini tab > Then check all boot paths tab > Click on that and this should delete the choice that is not required > Click apply and reboot system. Check the box, telling Windows not to display that message again,
so it will not be displayed in the future.
Or use this.

Out of curiosity: Is it correct that what I've done simply keeps my computer from recognizing the invalid operating system during boot? The invalid operating system is still on my hard drive and will stay there as long as the hard drive lasts?
Thanks again,
Marvin

Happy to hear that the problem is resolved.
I don't believe the second copy is still there, but I could be mistaken.
When I was using Powerquest's DriveImage, to clone hard drives daily, the same thing happened, I used the same procedure and I never found any 'spare' operating systems on the hard drives.
