slave drive help

I've replaced my old HD with a larger one and have made it the master drive. I left the old drive in place but did not connect to the master. Now I want to do that but am unsure how to go about it. The old HD has the WinXP OS on it which I want to delete. Can I connect the two drives and then delete XP from the old drive or will I have problems with this? What about the jumpers? My Dimension 8300 invoice mentions a 120GB ultra ATA drive but does not indicate the make. How do I configure the jumpers to make this the slave?
Any advice appreciated.

From your post. I'll assume it's an EIDE hard drive.

Set the jumpers to "Cable Select" connect the "Master to the end cable connector, the "Slave" to the center connector.  The jumper settings are on the hard drive's labels.

Do not install the "Slave" hard drive, until the you have have installed XP, drivers and applications on the new "Master" hard drive and after you have the system working to your satisfaction.  Then install the second [old] hard drive, check the BIOS setup that it's is enabled [on], then partition and format it, by using XP's disk management.

The following generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, can help.
They are by Seagate, but apply to all brands.

Yes, thanks, it is an EIDE drive. Thanks for the instructions. I have the new drive up and running. What I would like to do is connect the old drive as the slave and then be able to access the old data on it without reformatting. Is this possible or not?

Connect the old drive on the middle of the data cable, it's already jumpered just fine.

Boot the computer.  Copy the data.  Then use Drive Management to reformat the drive and use it for backup.

Thanks very much. That's the answer I was hoping for!
