Slow Running Computer
My computer is running slow, I recently put more memory in and it's still running slow. When I go into the system option it shows that it's only running at 75% free. Also from time to time a screen will come up saying that the memory is low and that I need to restart the computer, but I know it's not low b/c I just bought more.

I am using Windows 98 2nd Edition, I had 128 of memory I added 256, so I now have 384 of memory. The message comes up randomly it never comes up at the same time or when I am using certain applications. I don't have any spyware on my system, and yes I have ran for viruses. I have a Dell Dimension T Series 550.

It's really tough to answer your questions without knowing which model computer you have and which version of Windows you are running. How much memory did you add? How much total memory do you have? Have you scanned for viruses with up-to-date virus definitions? Have you removed all spyware from your system? What programs are you running when the problem occurs? What programs are running in the background? The more information you can provide, the less we will have to guess about what the problem could be.

When you say that you only have 75% free, what do you mean? Is this system resources or memory. If it is system resources, this is quite good and you should have no trouble running until system resources are well below 10%. You can improve the amount of system resources you have free immediately after startup by using the advice at the following site and eliminating all unnecessary programs from running at startup:

Eliminating unnecessary programs may also help speed up your computer. Post back if this doesn't help.

So did you take the steps recommended at the site I referenced in my last reply?

Does the message mention Virtual Memory?
It doesn't matter how much real memory you have Windows always want tonnes of hard disk space as virtual memory. If you have less than 500MB free space you tend to get problems

Also if you have alot of unwanted or old programs you never use it is a good idea to go into the Control Panel. And then go into Add/Remove Programs and, only remove the programs that you know you are not using. That should free up alot of extra Hard drive space.
Hope that helps,
