axg8746:

DLA is what's known as a packet-writing program. It uses a special format to write data from just about any application. HOWEVER, the convenience comes at a price. DLA tends to take control of drives and make it difficult to use them for other purposes. And the discs written by DLA have compatibility issues with other systems. My suggestion would be not to use DLA at all. Disable it in drive properties. Use either Sonic or the Windows CD burning wizard.

Thanks but I cannot start Sonic because I get that program has encountered a problem message, Sonic was also the only way I ever burned anything on this machine before. I did disable DLA on all drives and now intead of the disc needs to be formatted message after clicking drive D, I now get D:\ is not accessable. Incorrect function.

Hi axg,

John ~ Osprey is currently off-line. Microsoft has an article on that error message, even though it mentions Roxio, this can happen with any third party burning program.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, article 40.
I would suggest though, you click on the Technical Support tab in the top left corner of this page, then click on the Drivers & Downloads link, enter information for system and scroll to Applications to check for a possible update/patch for Sonic`s software.

Best Regards!

I tried to update the Sonic Software from the Dell tech suport area and alll of the updates tell me "Setup cannot find a valid version of this software to upgrade. Please make sure you are using the correct upgrade version." Do you think a system restore to the last time I know Sonic worked would help anything.
Thanks

I hate technology. When I try to restore through windows it tells me that it cannot be completed. I do run Norton System Works, I tried to do it through there also and for some reason it is only goinig back to September 2 of this year. I know Sonic has not been working longer than that so anyone got any other ideas.

Hi Axg,

Do you have the software disc to reinstall the Sonic software? If you do, then click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 13-0, article 24 and perform a clean install of the program.
If you do not the disc, then contact Dell and request it, frankly request all your software discs.

Best Regards!

I think I do have the CD but it is at home and im away at school. I was planning to reformat anyway (extremly slow i got infected with something) do you think that this would help burning through windows. I have an mp3 player that im using as a hard drive to back up the files I need for now. The best thing about my school is I can get a free, legal copy of XP Pro from our library which is good cause that cd is at home too if I even have it.

For data file writing to a CD, the Windows CD burning wizard is fine. For routine file backup, it's not my preferred choice (a second hard drive is easier and faster) but it's acceptable.
