spill

About a week ago my boyfriend spilled wine on my computer. It's definitely finished and he already bought me a new one. My only concern now is can I recover what was on my hard drive even though my computer is officially dead? I was told that the hard drive can be removed and placed onto the new computer, but is it possible that the wine spill damaged the information on the hard drive? Also, does this involve physically putting the old hard drive into the new computer, or can the files just be copied?

Thanks,
Marissa

while it is possible that the old drive was damanged, most likely it is perfectly fine.  you'll need to remove the drive (post the model of the broken computer and I'll post a link showing you how to remove it).  once removed, your best bet would be to buy a 2.5" USB2 enclosure to put the drive in -- these run about $20 shipped online at the most.

This enclosure will let you connect the drive to any computer with a USB2 port -- at which point you can transfer any data off you want.

If your current computer is identical to the broken one, you might be able to directly swap the drive and boot from it -- otherwise this likely won't work and you'll need the enclosure mentioned above.

Thanks for your reply. You'll probably save me some money if I can do it myself. My old computer was an Inspiron 4100
