Take care with new SSD/HDDs, they are thinner than older drives and hence you may not be putting in the drive correctly. Crucial drives should ship with a spacer....

Yes, subject to the fact that the controller in the system will limit the drive's speed significantly, and that if you're running Windows, you're on Vista or above. It'll still be far faster than a hard drive.

Yes you can I have one in a D820 which is the slightly larger version of that model. As mentioned the SSD won't run at full speed but it will still perform significantly better than a conventional HDD.
You should follow the upgrade path to Windows 10 32 Bit (64 Bit compatibility depends on your processor) via the Windows 10 10130 Insider preview as demonstrated here:

I installed the SSD in the D520, but the Laptop didn't recognize the SSD and wouldn't boot up. The prompt said: "No drive detected". Can I make the SSD work in my computer? The SSD had a Windows 7 32bit operating system.
