oh sorry, the D drive was my cd-rom/cd burner drive.

it's a Dell Dimension 4300 w/ Windows XP

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the cable to the drive. Check the BIOS setup to make sure it is set to automatically detect the drive.

If the drive still doesn't show up, replace it.

How to enter the BIOS setup.
At the first text on the screen, or when the Dell logo appears, press the F2 key every three seconds until the message Entering Setup appears.

Then if D is the slave hard drive, then click on it and click "enter and use the "arrow" keys to change the setting and follow the prompts to save and exit the setup.
