Targeted read test fail WHD20-43E
I downloaded Dell diagnostics and several of the tests failed for the HDD, they were;
Targeted read test
SMART short self test
Linear read test
I also did F12 diagnostic at boot up and got fail Return code 7.
I did an additional Dell PC check and the Trageted Read Test failed with the code WHD20-43E and the rest of the test skipped.
I have also done a windows chkdsk and and have 5420kb of bad sectors which I have recovered/repaired.
This has been going on for some time on this HDD but I am getting no problems with it other than it fails the tests.
Is there anyway to get more detail on the HDD and what the problem is and is there anyway to isolate the sectors so the HDD will not fail? or is it just a matter of time before the HDD crashes?

Hi AJBuser,
As suggested by osprey4. The errors on the diagnostics indicate your hard disk drive (HDD) would fail and may be nearing the end of its life. Please backup the data from the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it. Then run the diagnostics again.

Hi AJBuser,
Your hard drive angel has protected you (so far). Go buy a new drive and sin no more. :emotion-2:
If your system is still under warranty, contact Dell about a replacement drive.
