TEAC DVD + RW BURNING PROBLEM
I can't seem to get my TEAC to burn DVDs anymore. I have an XPS Gen 2, with TEAC DVD + RW DV-W58E drive, and a Canopus capture device. I have had success in the past capturing old VHS and 8mm video to my hard drive and using Sonic's "My DVD deluxe version 5" to edit, then burn to disc.
Everything works as expected, until the final step when the actual burning is supposed to occur. But then the process "self-cancels" and an error sign says:
"Device Error: Sense Code 37303 - Power Calibration Area Error -
Sequential Write (DVD Err, 226051)..."
And that's it. I can't tell if something is wrong with the TEAC, or something wrong with the computer or software. I am using (several times) brand new Memorex DVD + R discs, which I have used successfully in the past.
Anyone who knows what's going on out there? I sure could use some help. This is stumping me. How do I go about diagnosis and repair?
Thanks very much in advance.
JD

Hi JD,
Power Calibration Error is usually related to media or an issue with the drive. Since you have covered the media, consider giving the Dell firmware update a try.

Best Regards!
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Power calibration error is usually associated with low quality media. Memorex is not a good quality media. Try Verbatim, TDK or Maxell media. Or Fuji if you can find any that say Made in Japan.
It may have worked ok in the past, but Memorex frequently switches suppliers. See this chart.

Jeff,
Thanks for the firmware tip. I'll try that too and let you know.
What about re-installing the Sonic Software that came with the XPS?

Dave,
Thanks. I didn't realize that Memorex itself could be a factor. I'll switch.

Double check that you have the actual disc. Dell stopped sending discs with some of their systems. You may have to contact them and request it.
Take care,

Jeff, et al,
I did have the original Sonic software disc, so I reinstalled (actually the disc "uninstalled" automatically then reinstalled) the software for the DVD program and, SURPRISE: The DVD burn function worked! This was before I downloaded the TEAC driver update (per advice) and before I bought new "non-Memorex" blanks, which I still intend to do.
I believe what happened to me was a nasty virus infection that occured in January must have damaged some software... this program and probably others yet to be determined. The virus is gone (knock on wood) but the damage is not, evidently.
I should have mentioned the virus in my original post, but it didn't occur to my humble self that it would be connected. Indeed, I am still only speculating that it was the problem here at all.
Again many thanks for your great help. You experts are great. I really appreciate reading the help you give to everyone in your many posts.
Regards,
JD
