Turning on DMA
Have Dimension 8200 P4 1.8 GHz ,767MB Ram, Bios AO9. Replacing DVD rom and CDRW with DVD rom and DVDRW. Cable Select jumpers set, Secondary IDE Channel. Initial install Master: DVD rom top position; Slave: DVDRW second position. Nero info showed DMA on for Master DVD rom but off for Slave DVDRW. Uninstalled Secondary IDE and rebooted,no luck. Switched DVDRW to Master in top postion and DVD rom to Slave second position and Nero info showed DMA on for Master DVDRW but not on for Slave DVD rom. So bothe Lite-on products must be DMA compatable.
Thru device manager Secondary IDE Channel Properties doesn't list DVD and DVDRW seprately (no position o and 1) and doesn't list Advanced Settings Tab to check on DMA status as others have stated so unsure how to access.
In Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers the following are listed:
Intel 82801BA Ultra ATA Contoller
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary Channel
Have updated each of these with no success. Wondering if Intel Ultra contoller is preventing me from seeing Advanced Tab with accesss to DMA ? Have also looked into registry but couldn't find individual devices since both had same drivers.
BTW both devices work but DVD can be a little choppy if something else running. Speed test on DVD rom shows huge cpu usage when running.
Hope someone can help, Thanks in advance

Red Beard,
Double check that each drive shows on/enabled.
If this is correct, try a new IDE cable, there may be a problem on the middle connection.

Hi Red Beard,
It is possible the second drive, Drive 1 on the Secondary IDE channel is turned off in the BIOS/System Setup.
Enter the BIOS/System Setup and verify the IDE channel is set to Auto and/or that both drives are tunred on.
Here is your User Manual:
8200 series
Best Regards
PS: Leave the DVD/RW in the Top Bay, Cable Slect, "end" connection of IDE cable.

Hi Red Beard,
Have you tried the Dell Push DMA utitliy?
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 13.
Ask for a 40-pin/80-conductor type. Some say ATA100/133 cable.
Best Regards!
