Unmountable Boot error Dimension 4600

I need some major help! I recently got the dreaded blue screen with the Unmountable Boot Error
Stop: 0x000000EP, 0x82BA8C08, OxC000009C....) on my Dimension 4600 which had been running very slugish as of late.

So I booted from my WinXP CD and ran the chkdsk /r command.

After a 26% completion I received the message: The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems.

I then proceed to type in fixboot and I get the following message:  The target partition is C: Are you sure you want to ride a new bootsector to the partition C?

I said Y and it did nothing and N does nothing either, so I have no idea what to do. Needless to say, any words of advice would me MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!

Back up any data you wish to save and try running dell diagnostic's extended test on the hard drive, I think you'll find that the hard drive is failing.

Thanks Bev.

But I cant back up things on my computer because I cant boot it up. I had run a NERO back up on my C:drive but I am not 100% sure it worked properly. Been trying to look at the DVD and CD's I used and all the files are compressed and unrecognizable on my labtop.

If my computer is networked, is there anyway to tap into it to get files?

If the old hard drive still spins, replace it, reinstall windows, install all the updates and when you are satisfied it's operating correctly, then temporarily the old drive as the slave and see if you can transfer the data to the new hard drive.

If the drive does not spin, then your chances of recovering the data are just about nil, unless you employ the services of a data recovery company and this would be very expensive.

Hey Bev,

Thanks for the advice. How would I know if the Hard Drive still spins, is there away?
Also, now the recove options gets to 50% (as opposed to 26%). I keep on running it to see if it will eventually get to 100% but I am not holding my breath on it...

Thanks again for the advice.

Ok big update. After running chkdisk /r for the 6th time or so, I finally got the wonderful message:
Found and fixed one or more errors. My heart skipped a beat, but it wouldnt be for long for now I when I reboot I get this new message:

Stop: C0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}. The image wldap32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the corrupted checksum.

I am trying to do some research on this error, but if anyone has any advice, I would GREATLY appreciate. All I want to do is to be able to boot up Windows, get everything I need back up'd and get a new computer.

Forget about booting Windows.  The more you play, the less likely it is you will recover anything.  Buy a new drive, install XP.  Then, TRY to access this drive as the secondary and recover data.

Bev- thanks for the links!

Rick- thanks for your suggestion, is there a specific brand of hard drive that works best with my model Dell Dimension 4600?

Any step by step advice that you can give me as I have never installed a hard drive before. How would I be able to access my old drive (I know you place it as your slave) but how would I be able to access my data once I install a new drive and reload XP?

Thank you once again, you have no idea how much I appreciate the help!

In the future, by using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.

No brand works best, but Seagate has the longest warranty and Maxtor is the least reliable.  Click on the Desktop tab above, then your model, then User Guides for documentation.  Once installed, turn the drive to Auto in Bios (F2 on startup), and you will see it - or not.
