Using IDE w/ SATA

I am about to purchase a DELL XPS-420.

It will have a single 750GB SATA Hard-Drive.

I have several IDE Hard-Drives loaded with stuff from

my current computer.

Will i be able to configure my IDE Hard-Drives to the newer

SATA for Import and Export of data?

Any detailed and indepth advice would be highly appreciated...!

Thank You,

Dan

Hi, Dan:

This is a frequently asked question. The most straightforward approach is to purchase an IDE hard drive enclosure. You cannot "configure" IDE drives to make then work with SATA ports. Another approach would be to install an IDE controller card, but you'll be on your own with respect to where to putr them in the case. Hard drive enclosures are cheap and very easy to use.

You can hook up your computers to the same router and then copy your data from the IDE drives to the new computer's SATA drive.

I just have to second the recommendation to buy a hard drive enclosure (USB or firewire).

- It will solve your current problem

- It will give you a functioning external hard drive you can continue to use for backup or other purposes

- You'll learn how easy it is for the future instead of buying prepackaged external drives

Thank You All for your quick responses.

Apparently i need further education.

I searched the DELL and two other computer web sites

for IDE-hard drive enclosures and found only SATA

enclosures.

It's possible i found what i was searching for but did not

recognize the item or flat out did not understand exactly

what i was looking for.

Anyone have a link or could offer a better description of

what i need....??

Smart ashed replies are welcome...!

(... it's smaller than a bread box.... right?)

Thanks for your patience...!

Whoami:

Not sure where you're searching but Google found 214,000 results in 0.24 seconds.

Do they have Google where you live? :D

If you go to tigerdirect.com you will find everything you will ever need for anything you attempt. I get all of my electronics from there. Good luck and I just bought a IDE hard drive enclosure from them and it was $28.48. That is the total price with tax and shipping already added. Have a good day!!

Look on eBay.  You can get 3.5 in housings for 15 - 20 dollars w/shipping & 2.5 in housings for 10 - 15 dollars.
