Using System Restore for corrupt registry

After reinstall of windows Home edition on Inspiron 5000e, get message ..".could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system."
In using Dell instructions for system restore, at  line 7 which says "type copy_registry_machine__system c:\windows\system32\config\system"  and press enter get "command not recognized".

Appreciate any help

System restore won't help a corrupt registry. First run the Dell diagnostics (on a blue and white CD that shipped with the system) on the hard drive - do the extended test. If the drive is on its way out (fails the test), you'll have to consider data recovery options.

hello!

you should run diags for the hdd not for the optical drive. if it will fail you might need to replace the hdd. you can try reinstalling the OS, possible that it will work.

Thanks for your response

I got that diagnostic tool from the Dell support site, it was called "32 bit diagnostics" and was the only tool to show up under diagnostics for an Inspiron 5000e. It took 4 floppy disks and several hours to run. Do you think it did not test the HDD also?
