Hi Boo_hoo,

You might get lucky and use the the Restore Feature in Windows XP to rol the system back to a date before this started.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, article 17.
Next, you could consider checking Roxio site and apply the latest available update for your versions 5. Also at times if this is a software issue, uninstalling / reinstalling then applying the updates is needed.
Finally Dell has a firmware update for the drive to version A03 listed here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R35145&formatcnt=1&fileid=39125

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

My condolence to the deceased Boo Hoo, I too have had to lay a drive or two away to rest !!

Since DVD/RW are cheaper now, you might consider looking at one for a replacement.

Try New Egg

Best Regards
