Wierd USB HDD problem

Hi Guys,

I have an E521 (new) running Vista Home Premium. I bought an Integral HDD USB 2 enclosure which I inserted my Maxtor 80GB 3.5 inch drive into. Whatever I do Vista only sees 31.4GB.

If anyone has any clues as to why it would be appreciated.

One suggestion.... double check the jumper on the hard drive.  It sounds like you may have accidently enabled the 32 gig limit jumper setting.

Hi Majestic,

I have to admit that I have started guessing jumper settings. I tried all other settings (including no jumper) and the machine just doesn't see the drive at all in explorer...  the only place that the drive is spotted is in Device Manager under Hard Drives.

What do you reckon?

Does the drive need to be partitioned and formatted ?   If so, the drive won't be seen in Explorer until it is.

it was previously setup as an XP dynamic disk.  I have now formatted the 31.4GB that is there. The instructions for the enclosure say to set the disk as a Master. When I tried this before formatting the 32G Explorer could not see the disk and neither could the disk manager in Control Panel. Would you recommend trying it back as a master to see if it shows up now that it is formatted?

Yes, I would give the jumper a try.  If the system detects the drive then I would try repartitioning and reformatting it as NTFS.

Thanks Majestic.  I set the jumper back to Master and the drive showed up. Formatted to the right size.

Wonderful.
