Will not boot

I turn on my computer, the DELL logo comes up then goes blank,  next a message pops up saying "INVALID BOOT.INI FILE", a couple of seconds go by, another message pops up saying "NT DETECT FAILED".  The computer goes blank and tries to reboot with the same result, and keeps repeating until I push the Power Button to turn it off.

What is my best course of action for recovering my files and fixing the problem?

I have a Dimension 4600 that was purchased about 2 1/2 years ago.

You need to run the Windows XP Recovery console.

Do you have your XP reinstallation disc handy?

BTW, this is my 20,000th post. A milestone for me.

Actually, once you get past 20k, they double your per post remuneration (2 x $0 = $0). :)

I have fixed the "INVALID BOOT.INI FILE" problem, I no longer get that message,  but I am still getting the "NT DETECT FAILED" message and it is still not booting.

What is my best solution for fixing this problem?

Brad:

Let me suggest you back up your important files as soon as you can and plan to perform a clean reinstallation of the operating system. Follow these instructions to reinstall your operating system and drivers.

I haven't had any luck with your last suggestion.  When I boot up with the windows reinstall disk there is a message at the bottom of the screen saying to press F3 to start  Automated System Recovery.  Will this erase all my current documents and files?

The other idea that I had is right now I am using my old COMPAQ Presario loaded with Windows ME can I get a data transfer cable and retreve my documents and files from my DELL even though I cannot get it to boot up?

You cannot use the transfer technique without the ability to boot your bad system. However, you could try a USB drive enclosure. They're not expensive, easy to put the drive in and just plug and play.

The automated system recovery will not delete your files.
