Windows 98 loading Problem

Helping a friend fix a problem in loading Win 98 second edition on Latitude CP, M233ST, 6G HDD.  HDD had been repartitioned and formated.  Install of Win 98 hangs at checking system configuration.  Have updated BIOS but no change.  Copied Win98 directory from CD to HDD and install from HDD failed same way.

Any thoughts on why it hangs?   Thanks

Did you set the Primary Partition Active? Did you Format with the command    Format C:/s       to transfer System files to C:Drive? Go Back to Fdisk Options and set the Primary Partition active. If it has already been made active. it will tell you so. If you did not include the /s addition when formatting, go back and reformat only  on C: Drive with that command. Then try your W98 install again

Yes, I checked and the one partition was set active.   The formating was done as part of the Win98 intallation process.  The installation process hangs up when it looks at system configuration.  Originally, there was a small partition that had some information in it but not sure if this has to be present or not.   Wondered if thre is something in firmware that preventing he installation.
