Windows CHKDSK

This just recently started. On every start up and before windows starts CHKDSK starts and checks disk G which is an extra drive. It never finds anything wrong. It says I can stop the scan but doesn't recommend it. It also doesn't have a way to stop it.

Why does it run?  How can I stop it from running?

Dell dimension 4100
Windows XP Home SP1
800 P111
256 memory
80 GB HD on C
20 GB HD on G

This cycle started because it sensed a problem with you disc...either surface or data. It will continue to run until it is fixed and reset. Try this after you get booted and loaded.....right after you've booted fresh......

start\run\cmd\

then  "C:\     "enter"     (if this doesn't clear it---leave off the "\" portion)

then CD:\  " enter"

(this clears the directory)

then type "CHKDSK [space]  /F"   (the "/f" is a switch to "FIX" THE ERRORS OR BAD SECTOR)

this will fix the error and clear the need to run at boot. (if not, then you have another problem other than surface or data errors)

****BE SURE TO RUN THIS ON ALL DRIVES AND PARTITIONS*****

Thanks mlayz1.

C is the drive I boot to. To run it on G which is the problem would I type GD:\ to clear the directory in G.

Anytime I tried the clearing steps For C & G I would get either, "the file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." Or, "is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. If I just try,
C:\CHKDSK /F  I would get, "File system is NTFS
Cannot lock current drive
CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked Y/N"

G:\CHKDSk /F File system is NTFS
Cannot lock current drive
CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. CHKDSK may run if this volume is dismounted first. All opened handles to this volume would then be invalid. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume. Y/N If I enter N Then I get,
CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked Y/N"

Any ideas on what to do now?

Sorry, I've been out of town, and didn't think to check this account.

To clear the drive I think you'd go

"C:\G:
G:\CD:"
That should clear it. (I think you can also use "HELP" at the prompts for additional commands....not the entire list, but a helpful one in times .like these.

The CHKDSK dismount problem I've seen before, and don't remember exactly what it was....but I'd try booting into "SAFE MODE."

After boot go

start\run\msconfig

At the pop-up window go to the BOOT.INI tab and check the "SAFEBOOT" box....there may also be an advanced tab that will let you alter the "safeboot" down to a item by item boot. Play around with the "advanced" tabs different features or use your "HELP."

Try my other email address.....I check it all the time.....if you need some more help. You might consider a good clean fresh install. I can send you the links to the bootable CD's or floppys that make it really simple.

I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish....just get out of CHKDSK....or what?
