Windows XP BackUp Utility

I have a dell inspiron 5100 with a Samsung CDRW/DVD SN-324. I have downloaded the backup utility from my windows disk. Everything works fine until I click on "write these files to CD" that is when things go berserk. The CDRW does not respond, the desktop icons disappear and I generally have to shut down. I am using the procedure of creating a backup file first and then trying to write that file to CD, I am also keeping my backup file size down to 650MB. Anyone have any suggestions?

hmm, does the program see your cdrw as a burner?

Actually, I have been taking a better look at the problem and it appears to be in the CDRW/DVD instead of the backup utility program. Any attempt to burn a CD using REAL, or Roxio is causing the computer to stop responding, the desktop icons vanish and I resort to ctrl, shift, esc to regain control. I tried a system restore, no joy. Any suggestions?

if you have already tried looking for spyware and viruses then suggest you try uninstalling roxio then reinstalling it.

Yeah, I thought about viruses and other contamination and checked out all those possibilities. All the test are proving out to be the CDRW itself. I don't use the burner very often, and did not notice any problems until I went to backup my information. Thanks,
