WINDVD 16x - Error Message - " Create Overlay Failed...." HELP!!!

Tried to get Help!!! under video... Maybe the wrong place???

Would appreciate any help I can get on this one... When I try to use my WINDVD 16x the player begins to run and the WINDVD 16x player screen appears - then I receive this message. " Create Overlay Failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again" Done all that and more and I tried all the suggestions to others having the same problems in other messages, none of them worked...

I have a Dimension 8100 which came with Windows ME (keep it) and upgraded to Windows XP professional (should have went back to win98)... I did have the WINDVD 16x working at some point when first installed XP about four months ago but somewhere along the line something changed... Don't use the DVD too often so didn't notice when...

Again, would appreciate any help or suggestions...

Thank's

Hi Oxbow72,

I don't know all the things you have tried to correct the problem so this may be a duplicate.
Check these suggestions from Intervideo here ...........

Hi,

I had the same problem, it took me 2 months to resolve, in nthe end the fix for your problem with Windvd is to turn off everything with an IP address after that you will find it works prefectly. Especially turn off Netmeeting.

Regards

Ray

Ive heard enough! This is rediculous. The solution is not to "turn off everything with an IP address"! There is a problem with either the program or microsoft or the DVD player. Im not looking to find some way to trick my computer into making us both think stuff is workinig the way its supposed to. And does Dell share this virtue and ethic with me? Nope, every time Ive called customer support, first off Im speaking to somone that cant speak or understand English, and then Im told to go to microsoft. I want my problems fixed, not ignored or passed over. Dell is the one responsible for the packaging of Windows and the programs packeged with it. They are responsible for fixing things like this, but they declare otherwise. And Im sick of both microsoft and Dell having us resolve our own issues in this manner. We pay the money for support and then we get some forum with endless posts to weed through to ultimately FIX IT OURSELVES!

Ive fixed the problem, and Im fairly confident that this is what all of you need to do......

First click start-->Run-->and type: dxdiag. Then click: Display. Look for 3 settings:

1. Direct Draw Acceleration

2. Direct 3D acceleration

3. AGP Texture Acceleration.

If any of those features are disabled, you've found the problem.

The solution:

First, go to www.microsoft.com and nownload the latest release of DirectX which would be DirectX9b.

After you have downloaded and istalled this, now you need to install or reinstall your drivers for your video card. Insert your drivers cd that came with your windows package and computer, yes you have one and if not then you should have a media with a driver that came with your video card.

Now, all you have to do is install the appropriate driver, the one thats relevent to your video card. Thats it! Your done and if you've gotten this far, I was right in your diagnosis and WinDvD will now work.

Good luck and you should watch  Gangs of New York on your now working DVD player, its a great movie.

And what if after those steps you describe Direct Draw and AGP Acceleration are both still greyed out and non-functioning (causing the overlay failed error).
