XP REINSTALL FAILURE

Question

I was reinstalling Windows XP on my Inspiron 1100 Laptop. I received the followiing error message.   FATAL ERROR   Error has occured that prevents XP set up from continuing   I tried to reboot but received the same error message.   How can I boot my Inspiron 1100 into DOS so that I can format my hard drive?

Why are you reinstalling? Have you run the Dell diagnostics on the hard drive to rule out a failing drive, which would not be unexpected in a notebook of this age?

If you are using a valid OS disk then try this.   If you have already formated the old drive for a fresh reinstall and it failed use a window 98 boot disk, Or a pc doctor cd. Cd will boot, run a low level format, use the fdisk and create large partition ntfs (Quick)  function, then format C: .... Then reinstall your operating system...Works great on older drives.
